Mrs. Cynthia Lynne Hunter Hicks, 58, of Roanoke, VA, passed away Tuesday December 19 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Hicks was born in Surry County, NC, February 5, 1959 to Nellie Gilley Hunter and the late Clyde Monroe Hunter. Cindy graduated from East Surry High School in 1977, graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina at Asheville in 1979 and graduated Cum Laud from the University North Carolina at Greensboro in 1981. Cindy was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church. During her career, Cindy worked in Human Resources with the last nine years as HR Director at Brandon Oaks Retirement Center. She always tried to be respectful of her Mother and Father. With her Mother now in the nursing home, Cindy has faithfully spent the majority of her Saturday’s visiting her during the last six years. Cindy is a survivor of Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes for 47 years. Enjoying and participating in as many JDRF Fund Raising events as her health would permit. She battled this dreadful disease courageously until her passing, always optimistic of a cure. Cindy had a wonderful marriage for over 35 years and was a loving, devoted wife to her husband, Dennis. Her passing has created a huge emptiness. Cindy’s beaming, positive smile will be missed and will never be replaced. Surviving are her husband, Dennis Hicks of Roanoke, VA; her mother, Nellie Gilley Hunter of Jacobs Creek Nursing Home in Madison, NC; and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews that Cindy truly cherished only wishing to be able to spend more time with them. Cindy was preceded in death by her father, Clyde Monroe Hunter; a loving sister, Carole Hunter Walker; and a brother, Timothy Clyde Hunter. A graveside service will be held for Cindy at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at Skyline Memory Gardens with the Rev. Wayburn Mosley officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:30 AM on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Piedmont Triad Chapter, 216 W.
