The son of Conrad & Mary (Bealman et al) Bender, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Letterkenny Township, Franklin County, Pennsyvlania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Drafted at the stated age of twenty-one in Franklin County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Chambersburg November 4 as a private with Co. B, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), but deserted to date November 19, 1862.
2. On February 24, 1864, he enlisted for a $240 bounty at the stated age of twenty-two in Baltimore, Maryland, this time as "John W. Walker" and mustered into federal service there February 29 as a private with Co. F, 1st Maryland Potomac Home Brigade Cavalry. On June 27, 1864, he was hospitalized at Frederick, Maryland, but returned to duty by July 11 and honorably discharged by general order to date June 28, 1865.

He married Mary Ellen Farner and fathered Mary Elizabeth (b. 09/30/69 - married Albert Dwitt Holtry), John Albert (b. 01/23/72), William Henry (b. 12/26/74), Irene J. (b. 03/13/77 - married Harry J. Berger), Anna R. (b. 06/08/80 - married Elmer D. Rife), and Melissa Catherine (b. 04/10/83 - married Jacob S. Myers), David Abner (b. 02/27/86), Edna (b. 08/10/89 - married Harry J. Cummings), and Grace I. (b. 04/??/93). He died at his home from "fatty degeneration of heart" leading to "dropsy."
