428 Squadron's Handley Page Halifax Mk.V (#EB216) aircraft, with an aircrew of eight, took off at night from RAF Station Middleton-St. George for an air operation over Nuremberg, Germany. EB216 was attacked and shot down by a night fighter, resulting in its crashing near the village of Jungolzhausen, Germany, and taking the lives of five members of the crew. The three airmen who survived the crash were captured and interned in a German PoW camp.
