Edith Louise Scott, 72, of Madera, died on Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017 surrounded by her loving family after a brief battle with lung cancer. Born to Curtis and Clara Banks on June 29, 1945 in Madera, California, she was their second daughter, joining her older sister Oletha Pauline. Louise attended local elementary schools and graduated from Madera Union High School with the class of 1963. While in high school, she met a young man who became the love of her life. She and Jim Scott were married on July 28, 1963. The newlyweds settled in Madera, and welcomed the birth of their first son, Jimmy Scott, the following year.

Louise learned to cook from her new husband, and her extended family enjoyed her cuisine and signature dishes—which included her special spaghetti, shepherd’s pie, ribeye steak, and holiday green beans.

During the next decade, the young family lived and worked in Madera and other California cities, including Antioch, Pittsburg, and Brentwood.

Heartbreak struck on June 5, 1976, when Louise and Jim’s beloved son Jimmy was killed—a victim of gun violence. The couple struggled for years to put their life back together and move on from this horrific tragedy.

Exercising a talent for accounting, Louise worked at Grants Department Store and Bank of America. For several years, she and her husband owned a popular Madera hamburger stand, the Al-Ru Drive-in restaurant. Louise retired in 2010 from the bookkeeping department at Stone Container.

The next great joy of Louise’s life arrived on May 1, 1980, with the birth of the couple’s second son, Ryan Scott.

Because of Jim’s managerial position with the Georgia-Pacific corrugated manufacturing plant, the family moved cross-county to plants in South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana. Following Jim’s retirement in 2006, he and Louise returned to Madera, living near Louise’s sister Oletha and helping her through terminal cancer.

Louise is preceded in death by her parents, sister, and son. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years Jim Scott, her son Ryan and his wife April Scott of Sunnyvale, CA, her uncle Bob Ragnetti and family of Madera, her uncle Pete and aunt Nada Kirk of Thompson Station, Tennessee, her nephew Rick Dorris and family of Madera, and many cousins and lifelong friends.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 26, 2017 at Jay’s Chapel, 1121 Roberts Ave., Madera, CA 93637. Funeral services at will be held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 27, 2017 at Jay’s Chapel with interment to follow at Arbor Vitae Cemetery, 1301 Roberts Ave., Madera, CA 93637.

Remembrances in her name may be sent to the donor’s favorite charity.
