Author. He is considered the greatest exponent of the "Verismo" (Realism) literary style. His novels and short stories depict life in his native Sicily, primarily realized in the novel "I Malavoglia" and the short story (and later play) "Cavalleria rusticana," which Pietro Mascagni used for the libretto of his opera of the same name.
