Richard worked as an airline mechanic for Capital and United Airlines for 41 1/2 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he was a staff sergeant, serving during the Korean War. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Hagerstown and a member of the Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post 373 of Greencastle, Pa. He attended school in State Line and Greencastle.
Surviving family in addition to his loving wife of 61 years, JoAnn, of Hagerstown, are one son, Rodney E. Byers; one daughter, Crystal A. Hoch; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Larry D. Byers; numerous nieces and nephews and his golden retriever, Megan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Robinson.
A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family at Beautiful View Cemetery, State Line. Military honors will be provided at the graveside by the Chambersburg VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard. Arrangements by the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.
