Thomas Harvey Covington Jr., 81, went to be with our Lord on December 14, 2017, at Parkland Hospital where he was being treated for a fall. He passed away of multiple causes that included cancer and diabetes.
He leaves behind a wife of 61 wonderful years, Janie . Children: Thomas and wife Alison Covington, James "Rusty" Covington , Jeannine and husband Mark Beegle, a sister Elaine and Jack Holmes. He had eight grandchildren; Misti and Mark Tankavich, Cory Davis, Cari Davis, LaTisha and Bryan Shafer, Sean Davis, Amanda and Terry Self, James Boone and Tara and Colton Garrett. Great Grandchildren; Aaron, Morgan, Dalton, Kyleigh, Kyle, Kamryn, Colby, Christian, Brantley, Masynn, Jordan, Lane, Shane, Aaragon, Legend, Jason, Elizabeth and Little Terry, and Great Granddaughter Ellie., also many nieces and nephews.
Tom was a well-loved man that participated in many activities throughout his life. He spent 9 years in the National Guard and made to an E-5. He spent this time in the recon and assault weapons platoon as well as the combat support company 1st Brigade, 142 Infantry regiment. He began his career as a Police Officer with the Borger Police Department. After 3 years with Borger PD, he spent 21 years with the Dallas Police force making it to Senior Corporal. During this time he received Officer of The Year award from the Dallas Community Police Awards Committee. He was also a runner up for Officer of The Year given by Friends of Dallas Police in 1985.
After leaving the Dallas Police force he and his partner, Robert Sadler wrote the Book, "One Step From Murder" The Friendly Burglar Rapist. This true crime book was written about a rapist that Tom and his partners were finally able to catch after four years of hard work.
He spent about 20 years as a United Methodist Certified Lay Speaker and over 30 years in DALCLIFF WYNNEWOOD LIONS CLUB, during which time he became a Melvin Jones Fellow and a Life Member of the Texas Children's Camp, as well as a life member for the "Sports Extravaganza." For 34 years he played St. Andrew and Judas Iscariot in the tableau, never missing a performance. He drove for Meals on Wheels for 34 years as well, with 47 years membership at Kirkwood United Methodist Church and finally over 50 years of Boy Scouting. During his scouting he received the Silver Beaver.
Along with all of his services to the community, he was a great role model to his family and friends. He has lifelong friends that helped support him along the way. Throughout his life he helped change many young lives in and out of his work and volunteer services. He brought many people to find salvation. Tom was a person who loved to joke around and enjoyed laughs even till the end.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00 p.m., on Monday, December 18th at Chism-Smith Funeral Home, 403 S. Britain Rd., Irving, TX 75060. Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m., on Tuesday, December 19th at Kirkwood United Methodist Church, 2232 W. 5th St., Irving, TX 75060. Interment will follow the services at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens in Irving, TX.
