British Army Major General. A native of Scotland, he had a distinguished career in the British Army, serving from 1913 until his retirement in 1947. After attending The Glasgow Academy and the University of Glasgow, he was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant into the 3rd Lowland Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, Territorial Force. The following year, he attended the Royal Military College, Sandhurst and was granted a commission as a 2nd lieutenant in the Regular British Army. When World War I broke out in August 1914, he saw action at the First Battle of Ypres. He later participated in the 1936–1939 Arab revolt in Palestine, and World War II (2nd Battle of El Alamein, the Allied invasion of Sicily, the Allied invasion of Normandy, and the Battle of Geel). Among the commands he held include the British Land Forces Norway (1945), the 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division (1944 to 1945), the 56th (London) Infantry Division (1943), the 153rd Infantry Brigade (1940 to 1943), the 27th Infantry Brigade (1940), and the 2nd Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) (1937 to 1940). His honors and awards include the Companion of the Order of the Bath, the Commander of the Order of the British Empire, the Distinguished Service Order & Bar, the Military Cross, the Commander of the Legion of Merit (US), the Officer of the Legion of Honour (France), the Croix de guerre (France), the Commander of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav, and was Mentioned in Despatches on four separate occasions. He died at the age of 78 and was interred in the John Murray plot at the top of the Glasgow Necropolis.
