James Francis McKernan
Sept. 28, 2014

Jim, or Mac, as he was often called, died peacefully in Tucson not long after his 90th birthday.
He was born in Lynn, Mass., the son of Edward and Beatrice McKernan, and brother of William McKernan, deceased. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Grace Ann McKernan and is survived by son Michael McKernan, of Benson; daughter Virginia LaForme, of Pinole, Calif.; granddaughters Jouelle LaForme and Celeste Sanford-LaForme; and great-granddaughters Alair, Swift, and Thistle.
Mac studied radio engineering and was a radio operator/engineer in the second World War. He met his wife, Grace Ann Duhan, while working as a chief engineer of a radio station in Vermont. He later worked as an audio engineer at the Voice of America in New York and Washington, D.C.
After a trip to South America, he decided to join the Foreign Service. He worked as a U.S. Information Service Officer at the U.S. Embassies in Quito (Ecuador), Asuncion (Paraguay) and Guatemala City during the mid ‘60s and early ‘70s. He was much loved and appreciated by his co-workers from those countries.
He also had many adventures in South and Central America including rafting probable first descents of wilderness rivers and flying in a small plane around an erupting volcano.
He and Grace retired in 1974 to build a log home and raise their own produce in Vermont. They moved to Sunsites, in the ‘80s and finally to Benson where they were cared for by their son Michael, until their deaths.
Jim and Grace were devout, active members of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Benson. A Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Benson, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Habit for Humanity, an organization that Mac and Grace supported for many years, would be appreciated.
