William Francis Derby, 92, of West Hartford, husband of Catherine J (Lycett) Derby, died, Wednesday (February 14, 2001), at John Dempsey Hospital.

Born in Hartford, the son of the late George F. and Signe (Peterson) Derby, he was predeceased by his first wife, Ethel (Gustafson) Derby, in 1982.

Mr. Derby worked as an engineer with the Torrington Company and New Departure of Meriden, and, after retiring, took a position as Business Agent for the Church Home of Hartford until 1984. He was an active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hartford, serving as an usher and Sunday School Treasurer, and was a member of the West Hartford Squires.

In addition to his wife, Catherine, he is survived by four sons, William F. Derby, Jr. of Albuquerque, NM, Donald N. Derby, and his wife, Priscilla, of Cromwell, R. Randolph Derby of Albuquerque, NM, and Jeffrey R. Derby of Burnsville, NC; his daughter and son-in-law, Susan B. and Wayne Vaughan of Columbia, SC; his sister, Dorothy Kahane of Springfield, MA; his four grandchildren, Christopher Vaughan of Portland, OR, Ashley Vaughan of Columbia, SC, Kassandra T. Derby and Susanna L. Derby, both of Cromwell; and his step-sons, Robert and Frederick Duell of California. Mr. Derby was also predeceased by his daughter, Carolyn Derby; and two brothers, George and Edward Derby.

Visitation will be Monday, Feb. 19, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 136 South Main St, West Hartford. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 20, 11 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of Emanuel Lutheran Church, 311 Capitol Ave, Hartford.
