Obituary of George Lars Hansen, 90, of Monteview, passed away in his home on Thursday, December 14, 2017.

George was born March 22, 1927, to Walter Vego and Pearl Wade Hanson in Milo, Idaho. He was the third of seven children. He attended the Milo Grade School and the Ucon High School where he graduated in May 1945. George served his country during World War II in the United States Navy.

George married Ruth Nancy Bean on January 7, 1949 and was solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple. They have been married for 69 years. For most of their married life, they have lived in Monteview, Idaho, where they raised their family of 5 daughters and 3 sons.

George has been a lifetime farmer, rancher and truck driver. He started his career by leasing an 80 acre farm in Milo while helping his father farm his 120 acres and also working at the Sugar Beet Factory in Lincoln. He used work horses to plow the fields, shock the grain, mow the hay, and stack it by using a derrick and slip.

In 1951, he heard the government was releasing ground in the Monteview area to be filed on under the Desert Land Act. They filed on 640 acres of sagebrush. In 1952, they moved to Terreton where he rented a 160 acre farm and started to work the ground in Monteview.

In 1959, they moved to Monteview to farm. He continued to increase his acreage until he retired. He enjoyed raising potatoes and feeding cows. Later in life, he raised elk for a few years. He was well known for his work ethic and honesty, well respected and a friend to all.

George was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served in many church positions including Elder’s Quorum President, Bishopric Counselor, Bishop and High Councilman. He also served 14 years as a Temple Ordinance Worker in the Idaho Falls Temple.

In the community, George served on the school board for West Jefferson School District 253. In 1993, he was awarded the Farm Bureau Outstanding Farmer of the Year for Jefferson County.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Monteview and eight children: Carrie (Bob) Fausett of Talmage, Utah, Cody (Robert) Telford of Monteview, Jackie (Lee) Pfeiffer of Malad, Brenda (David) Arcilesi of Sandy, Utah, Kent (Ann) Hansen of Monteview, Debbie (Robert) Ball of Hamer, Chad (Heather) Hansen of Dell, Montana, and Kirt (Sandra) Hansen of Monteview, 46 grandchildren, 115 great grandchildren plus 3 on the way and 2 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Afton Brown and Norma (Tom) Mann and a brother Delroy (Lerene) Hansen.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Pearl, two brothers, Lloyd and Leonard, one sister Mary, 4 grandsons and 1 great grandson.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 22, 2017, 11:00am, at the Monteview LDS Ward, with Bishop Kirt Hansen, officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday December 21, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and prior to the service on Friday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. both at the church building. Interment will be at the Fielding Memorial Cemetery in Idaho Falls at 3:30 p.m.
