Margaret (Wengel) Hoover, 85, a resident of San Ramon, California, since 2015, and formerly of Huntingdon, passed away at 1:05 a.m. Saturday, July 8, 2017, in San Ramon, California, after a healthy time of living independently.
Born Dec. 21, 1931, in Detroit, Michigan, she was a daughter of the late Eugene and Christine (Kubler) Wengel. She was united in marriage to Thomas M. Hoover of Huntingdon Sept. 28, 1959, in Detroit, Michigan. Mr. Hoover preceded her in death April 30, 2015, after 56 years or marriage.
Mrs. Hoover is survived by two children, Thomas S. Hoover of Argyle, Texas, and Andrea (Hoover) Truman of Pleasanton, California; and four grandchildren, Anna E. Hoover, David T. Truman, Jonathan M. Truman and Joshua S. Truman.
She is also survived by a sister, Helen Walz of Detroit, Michigan.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her mother and father-in-law, Blair and Mary Hoover.
Most recently, Mrs. Hoover attended the John Knox Presbyterian Church, Dublin, California. As a resident of Virginia, she was a member of the Bonsack Baptist Church, Roanoke, Virginia. While residing in Huntingdon, she was a member of the Abbey Reformed United Church of Christ. As a church member, she led small group Bible studies for adults and Vacation Bible School for children.
Mrs. Hoover attended Detroit public schools and received a bachelor of arts degree in social work from Westfield State University, Westfield, Massachusetts.
Primarily a homemaker, she enjoyed being a stay-athome mother and rearing her two children, Tom and Andrea. She also served as an assistant to the pastor of the Abbey Reformed United Church of Christ, Huntingdon, as well as, an administrator of the Salvation Army of Springf ield, Massa- chusetts.
Mrs. Hoover had a passion for reading and studying the Bible, whether it be for daily devotions or in small groups. Due to job changes and the retirement of her husband, Thomas, Mrs. Hoover resided in seven different states throughout her lifetime including, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Virginia, Texas and California. Amongst the traveling, she sparked an interest in history and enjoyed taking art history classes and exploring local historical locations, as well as, visiting various sites throughout the United States and Europe. She also enjoyed swimming, doing group exercises and walking with friends.
A celebration of life service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, at the Abbey Reformed United Church of Christ, 515 Sixth St., Huntingdon, with the Rev. Gary Marcy officiating, followed by a lunch in the church social hall. Interment will be in the Anderson Cemetery, Penn Township, Hesston.
Family and friends will be received from 1 p.m. until the time of service Sunday, Oct. 29, at the church.
