A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, December 15, 2017 at Resthaven Cemetery Mausoleum with burial at Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 10:30 a.m. until service time Friday in the mausoleum.
Randy was born March 8, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois to Cecil and Marjorie (Covault) Baker. He graduated from Lincoln High School, attended Drake University,
and served in the U.S. Army. He received several commendation medals including, National Defense Service Medal, Army Occupation Medal, and Sharpshooter.
Randy grew up on a horse ranch and his love for horses grew as he competed in professional horse riding competitions all over the United States winning trophy's and ribbons. He was an avid chess player and you could drive by his house any day and see him playing chess in his front yard with friends.
Randy was a naturalist, lived a holistic life, and prided himself on his gardening. He would tend up to 80 tomato plants for the "squintys" (chipmunks) and himself.
Randy was very considerate and never turned down an opportunity to help his neighbors.
He was deemed a "genius" and was his own scholar; acquiring all the knowledge, he could through reading. He could be found at the library checking out books, as he was always trying to satisfy his thirst for knowledge. When family would call him, he was known to answer the phone in Russian, Chinese, German, and Italian; he also learned to speak sign language and enjoyed teaching his family as well.
Randy loved to write poetry. In his spare time, he enjoyed riding his motorcycle, even in the winter, as well as riding around in his jeep and riding horses, all year round. Randy had a fond liking of opera music and marched to the beat of a different drummer.
Randy is survived by his sister, Barbara Baker; nephew, Brant (Vanessa) Baker and niece, DeAnn (Brent) Knoot.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Brian Baker.
In lieu of flowers, family request that memorials be directed to Des Moines area libraries in memory of Randy.
