George Raymond Oakley, 94, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 10 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
The funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at George Brothers Funeral Service. Burial will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park with military honors
Raymond was born November 1, 1923 in Greensboro to Les and Maggie Cain Oakley. When he was two years old, the Oakley family bought land and moved to Browns Summit, where he lived the rest of his life. He attended Monticello School class of 1943. He did not graduate but went back and achieved his GED at the age of 65, honoring a promise he made to his mother.
He proudly served in the US Army from 1943-1946 with the 545 Ordinance and was honorably discharged. He was an active member of the Midway-Monroeton VFW Post 8297 for 35 years and served as adjutant for many years.
Raymond was a sheet metal worker by trade. He and his brothers owned Quality Sheet Metal Works for 18 years. He also worked for W. H. Sullivan Mechanical Contractors and retired as project manager from Southeastern Mechanical Contractors.
Raymond was a perfectionist in all things metal. He could build anything, fix anything, design anything. He loved working outdoors and continued as long as his health allowed. He consistently proved the medical community wrong about his health even until the end.
He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-seven years, Carolyn Angel Oakley; parents, Les and Maggie Oakley; brothers, Roy and Howard Oakley; and sister, Dewey Boswell.
Raymond is survived by his wife of eleven years, Wanda Rigsbee Oakley; daughter, Sandra Cockman and husband Roger of Browns Summit; granddaughter, Christy Smith and husband Josh of Eden; great-grandsons, Logan and Toby Smith; bonus daughter, Dona George and husband Kevin Rochford of Greensboro; bonus granddaughters, Kristi Genopolos and her husband Chad of Greensboro and Brittany Tharp of Grayson, GA; bonus great-grandson, Paul Smith; special niece, Linda Haigh of Charlotte; nephew, Roy Oakley and wife Emily of Sandy Ridge; several other nieces, nephews and extended family; and special friends, Donna Steed, Jeff George, Jeff Hopkins, Scott and Phyllis Paschal and Terrie Priestley.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home prior to the service.
Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405 or Midway-Monroeton VFW Post 8297, 961 N. Church St. Ext., Reidsville, NC 27320.
