BARR, Clifford Lawrence (Dec 25, 1923 – Dec 3, 2017) Cliff was not only a member of the Greatest Generation but was also one of the greatest of all men to those of us who knew and loved him. Cliff’s accomplishments are impressive. To name a few he served in the Army Air Corps in China during WWII, completing 23 combat missions in the B-25 Mitchell Bomber, becoming an officer and was awarded two Air Medals and a Purple Heart. Shortly after returning to the U.S., Cliff graduated from UT with a degree in Chemical Engineering and became a Registered Professional Engineer. His distinguished career spanned 40 years with Shell Oil Company, Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, Gulf Resources and Chemical Corporation. He retired in 1988 as the President of IMV Corporation.
However, Cliff would quickly tell anyone that his most important and rewarding life pursuit was the marriage to his beloved wife, Lucile Peschka Barr on September 4, 1947. Their family began with three children, Jim, Steve and Tom and has culminated with seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren with more likely to come; not to mention his four orange cats, aka the “Ginger Mafia”. Cliff and Lucy lived in New Orleans, Bay City, Texas, Houston, Newgulf, Texas, Las Vegas and back to Austin. Cliff leaves many friends and admirers behind whose lives he positively changed. He was an encourager, mentor and friend to so many of us. Lucy and Cliff had 64 happy years together before her peaceful passing on Good Friday in 2012 in Austin.
Clifford was born in Gulf, Texas on December 25, 1923 and died peacefully in his sleep on December 3, 2017 in his home in Austin. Clifford is survived by his son Jim and family, Maricela Rodriguez Barr, Lauren Petty and family, and Austin Barr; son Steve and wife, Tammy, and children Stephanie Colgin and family, Michelle Van Hook and family, Christina Barr-Snell and family, Thomas Barr and Brittney Jean. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Nancy Barr, and sister, Betty Norton. Predeceasing Cliff are his wife, Lucy, son Tom, brother Leonard A Barr II, and his parents Leonard Alexander Barr and Louise Brown Barr. Also important to him was Dora Hererra, who capably and faithfully assisted Cliff’s mother, Louise and his wife Lucy.
