Walter Alvin Ferguson, 83, of Broadus, MT passed away on December 9, 2017 at the Powder River Manor in Broadus.

Walter was born on January 31, 1934 in Phillip, SD to Everett and Florence Lathrop Ferguson. When he was a teenager, Walter lost both of his parents and Robert “Bob” and Mary McCurdy became his surrogate parents. He graduated high school in Broadus and went into the Marine Corps, serving in the Korean war.
Upon returning from Korea, Walter attended Montana State in Bozeman where he received a degree in Teaching. He taught in Power, MT, Chinook, MT, then in Broadus for 22 years, and finally at the Ashland Public Schools as a guidance counselor. In 1963, Walter and Ella Mae Cook were married.

Walter loved hunting and sports, especially the Green Bay Packers and the Boston Red Sox, his dogs, working on his house and in his garden, and flowers. In his later years he took care of the Cottonwood Park.

Walter was preceded in death by his loving wife Ella Mae, his parents and his brother Duane.

Walter is survived by his stepson Tom (Colleen) Barrett of Billings, MT; grandchildren Dustin (Annie) Smith and their daughter Piper, Daniel Smith, Derek (Jenna) Smith and their son Ryot.

Memorials may be made to the Powder River Manor or the local VFW.
