Patrick K. Price, M.D., 68, died December 6, 2017. A Rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, followed by visitation 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Dec. 9, at St Agnes, 5250 Mission Road, Roeland Park, KS 66205. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Atchison at a later date. Contributions are suggested to St. Benedict's Abbey, 1020 N. 2nd St., Atchison, KS 66002. Care entrusted to Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, 208 N. 5th St., Atchison, KS. Pat was born in Atchison, KS on March 29, 1949 to Mary Ellen (Jochems) Price and A. Patrick Price. He graduated from Maur Hill in 1967 and KU in 1971. He continued on to KU Medical Center and completed a residency in Internal Medicine. He then completed a residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado Health Science Center in Denver in 1981. He was board certified in both fields. Pat married Cyndy Kuntzelman and moved to Kansas City in 1981 to open a solo practice in Independence and later in Blue Springs. He combined his practice with Eye Care, Inc. which ultimately became Discover Vision Centers. For 15 years Pat simultaneously served as a Regional Medical Director for Medicare through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, starting his days early in Blue Springs and working late in Topeka. Wearing his signature bow ties, and during the holiday season his famous red plaid Pendleton slacks, Pat enjoyed his medical community, staff and patients from Blue Springs, Independence and surrounding small towns. It pleased him to fill the role of a small town doctor by attending athletic events, fund raisers, weddings, graduations, birthday parties, church suppers, funerals and other events of his patients, his staff, and their families. Pat's proudest achievement was the family he built with his wife, Cyndy, and their two children, Megan and Joe. The family enjoyed wonderful road trip vacations to Mount Rushmore, the Badlands, The Grand Canyon, Bryce, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Canyon du Chelly, Mesa Verde and annual family ski trips to Colorado. Most memorable excursions were the '92 Barcelona Olympics and a 2016 trip to St Petersburg, Russia, with Megan and her husband, Hans. Cyndy and Pat also enjoyed superb tours together through Romania, the Dalmatian Coast, Peru and Machu Picchu, and to The Netherlands. The Price family wishes to thank his many diligent oncology doctors from KU and the pleasant and efficient nurses and aides at Westwood Cancer Center. We also thank Kansas City Hospice for the careful attention received in his final week. Pat celebrates the fact he is a cancer survivor, having a successful bone marrow transplant on August 9, 2017. He thanks his German bone marrow donor, and all people who are kind enough to be on donor lists. Pat was very glad to participate in clinical trials, and credits a wicked radiation trial for wiping out his AML cancer cells. Donating his brain for research is Pat's latest medical contribution. Pat is preceded in death by his father, Skeet Price, and sister Kerry Price Perry. He is survived by his wife, Cyndy, of the home; his son Joseph, daughter-in-law Molly and grandson, Dean Patrick Price of Lenexa. Megan and husband Hans Rouw, of Utrecht, The Netherlands. Pat is also survived by his mother, Mary Ellen Price and his brother, Phil Price, both of Colorado Springs. Pat was a generous and principled man who will be greatly missed and remembered by many.
