Gospel Singer. A native of Chicago, Illinois, he was the founder of the gospel singing ensemble, The Thompson Community Singers. In 1948, Brunson formed the choir while still attending the McKinley High School on the West Side of Chicago. In 1964, he was ordained a minister, and eventually founded his own church as well. As pastor of the Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, he founded and led the Thompson Community Singers (affectionately known as "the Tommies"), from their beginning, until his death in 1997. The choir are noted for there appearances at Madison Square Garden in New York, Carnegie Hall, the famed Apollo Theatre, and at Chicago's Gospelfest at Grant Park. They recorded several chart-topping albums, and were also Grammy winners for the 1996 recording, "Through God's Eyes." They also had success in 1986 with the recording, "There Is Hope." The song was No. 1 on Billboard's gospel charts for more then four months that year. Other gospel favorites by the choir included, "I'm On My Way to Heaven", "What a Wonderful World", "Soon Be Over", "My Father Is Right", and "My Savior." In 1998, the choir celebrated their 50th anniversary with the release of the album, "50 Blessed Years." Rev. Brunson passed away unexpectedly in 1997. In his memory a post office in his name was opened.
