Art was a graduate of Pella Christian High School and grew up in the Leighton area. He was united in marriage to Edith Jonker on June 3, 1948, in Peoria. To this union they were blessed with twin daughters: Judith and Jewel. Art farmed for 50 years and retired in March of 1984. One the many highlights of his retirement was driving truck delivering bean meal for Jerry Tschetter. Art enjoyed traveling, camping at Red Rock and Saturday night family gatherings on the farm. Art and his grandkids enjoyed pony rides in a cart he made from the 65’ windmill that stood on his farm. Art always enjoyed music; he was in choir as a boy, played the guitar and harmonica, sang in a men's quartet, and church choir. Art was a life-long member of First Christian Reformed Church in Pella.
Wherever he went, Art never knew a stranger. He was always ready to show off the beloved picture of Edith he carried in his wallet for 69 years. He also loved talking to customers while working on their cars at Bob's Automotive.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Edith of 69 years, his daughter Judy De Vries of Pella, and his son-in-law John Henderson of Houston, Texas and his grandchildren: Steven and Kristine Sparks, Joe and Susan Roozeboom, Scott and Rachel Renaud, and Stephen and Lacey Henderson and great-grandchildren: Jackson, Wyatt, and Dylan Renaud, Cole, Sadie, and Violet Roozeboom, and Elena, William, and Adriana Henderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Junella VerMeer, his daughter Jewel Henderson, and son-in-law Duane DeVries.
