HOLYOKE - Philip William Sheridan, Jr. of Holyoke, MA, died Monday, February 21, 2011 after a very brief illness which required a stay at the Heritage Hall facility in Agawam, MA. He was born in Manches-ter, New Hampshire on March 18, 1923 to Philip and Elizabeth (Grady) Sheridan. He grew up in Manchester, NH and attended McDonnell Grammar School and St. Joseph High school. He completed one year at Manhattan College, NY, before joining the US Air Force for World War II service beginning in January 1943 where he trained as a bomber pilot. In June 1944 he went overseas to join the 8th Air Force in England. While in the service, he completed 73 reconnaissance-type missions until his return to the States in September 1945. At that time he continued his college education to become an engineer and graduated in May 1949. He was predeceased by his sisters Mary Scruggs and Louise Sheridan as well as brother-in-laws Robert Scruggs and Robert Comer. His surviving sister, Jane Comer still resides in Manchester, NH. In addition, there are many nieces and nephews from the Comer and Scruggs families as well as relatives from the extended Sheridan and Grady families. During summer vacations while in college, Phil worked at the engineering firm of Tighe & Bond. After graduation he joined Tighe & Bond in August 1949 as a fulltime employee. He worked his way up through the firm to the position of President and Chief Engineer, eventually retiring in September 1995. Throughout his career, he was highly recognized as a Professional Engineer, skilled in water supply and sewage disposal. In addition to his engineering work throughout the western Massachusetts area that was covered by Tighe & Bond, he also participated as the Sippican Corporation engineer along with representatives from other United States firms in the development of the King Khalid Military City (KKMC) project in Saudi Arabia which started in 1972. Phil was married in June 1947 to Marilyn E. Waring (deceased July 2009), a South Hadley girl that he met at the Roger Smith Hotel while he was stationed at Westover Air Force Base. During their marriage, they enjoyed many years of vacation time at Cape Cod, Mullet Bay in St. Martin, and finally at Costa Linda in Aruba. They had eleven children, three of them (Philip III, Robert, and Mary) died as infants. He is survived by eight children, 20 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren: Elizabeth "Betty" (Glenn) Larivee of Holyoke, MA; Diane Garcia of San Diego, CA and her sons Mark and Jake Garcia ; Nancy (Dan) Burns of Longmeadow, MA and her daughter Jessica (Steve) Frey and their children MacKenzie and Maddeline Frey ; Patrick (Carol) Sheridan of New Bedford, MA and his son Matthew Sheridan and her daughter Liz Forgue; Jane (Richard) Merrill of Suffield, CT and their sons Alex and Max Merrill; Susan (Frank) Lawson of Holyoke, MA and their sons Tim Lawson, Dan (Stephanie) Lawson, Brian Lawson (aka: Brother Stephen, OSB), Kevin Lawson, Kyle Lawson, Sam Lawson, Chad Lawson, Nathan Lawson ; Thomas (Nancy) Sheridan of West Springfield, MA and their children Shelley and Michael Sheridan; Ann (James) Shevlin of Keller, TX and their daughters Kelsei, Tessa, and Carly Shevlin. During his career, Phil was active in the Holyoke Rotary Club and the Professional Engineering Association. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed extended traveling as well as doing yard work around his property and the neighborhood circle at Lindor Heights. The funeral will be held Friday morning at 9:30 from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, followed by a Mass in Holy Cross Church in Holyoke at 10:30. Burial will follow at Saint Rose Cemetery, South Hadley. Calling hours will be Thursday from 3:00 to 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Philip W. Sheridan - Tighe & Bond Scholarship Fund through the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts, Springfield, MA or to Holy Cross Church, Holyoke.
