Auxiliary Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange, California, from 2003 to 2015. The Most Reverend Dominic Dinh Mai Luong, D.D., was the first Vietnamese-born bishop to serve in the United States. Born near Hanoi, he began his seminary training in Saigon and was sent to complete his studies in Buffalo, New York, where he was ordained to the priesthood on May 21, 1966. Unable to return to Vietnam due to the war and for political reasons, he first served as a priest in New York. In 1976, he was sent to New Orleans, Louisiana, and he was the pastor of Mary Queen of Vietnam Catholic Church from 1983 to 2003. Named a Monsignor in 1986, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Orange by Pope St. John Paul II on April 25, 2003. His ministry focused on the needs of refugees and the spiritual care of the large Vietnamese population in his diocese. After retiring in 2015, Bishop Luong remained in service at St. Bonaventure parish in Huntington Park.
