Jim Bob Benton was born on Elm Creek in Menard County to Floyd and Nettie Benton. He was the eighth of nine children. His childhood was filled with hunting (He was deadly with a sling shot, knew where to get the very best rocks.), fishing, and ranching. He attended Sul Ross State in 1948 before being drafted into the US Army and going to Korea. He was awarded the Purple Heart. After two years, he returned to civilian live and Sul Ross. There he met the love of his life, LaVerne and they married one year later. They had 3 children, LaNeisha, Vicki and Button. After 10 years in the oil fields of west Texas, the family returned to Menard in 1966. Jim Bob loved family, friends and the outdoors. He was happiest when camping and fishing with family. He loved to hunt and he loved to cook. He was a wonderful Husband, Father and Grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Nettie, five brothers, Jack, Curtis, Lawrence, Vance and Ray Benton and one sister, Peggy Decker. Survived by his wife, LaVerne, sisters, Norma and Joan, and children and grandchildren.
