Sam J Crawford
Born: 06/08/1929 - Died: 09/25/2017
Sam Crawford passed away in Seattle, WA on September 25, 2017. He was born June 8, 1929 in Winter Haven FL to parents William and Viva Crawford; as he grew up his family settled in California. Afflicted with cerebral palsy, Sam more than made up for his lifelong physical disability with a brilliant mind full of determination, ambition and a great sense of humor.
Sam put himself through college by building houses in the summertime with his father. With a degree in mathematics and physics, Sam's 30 year career in California was spent working for the United States Navy, compiling data from missile test launches for use by Pentagon decision-makers.
Sam married Ellen Carrier in 1957, and raised two sons (Bill and Sam). Across the span of his life, Sam built 11 houses by hand, was always a leader in his church, traveled extensively, planted prolific gardens and fruit trees wherever he lived, and shared a Christ-like example toward whomever he met. After Ellen's passing, Sam married Barbara (Fall) in 2003; they spent their many years together gardening at their home in Bellingham and travelling the west in their RV.
Sam is survived by his loving wife Barbara; sister Gwen Wilcox (Galen); sons Bill (Lori) and Sam (Sherri); grandchildren Chris Pitcher (Elyse), Sara Kanda (Jason), and Jennifer Crawford; as well as great-grandchildren James and Cameron Pitcher, and Lily Kanda. A memorial service will be held on October 28, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Northwest Baptist Church in Bellingham.
