September 20, 1948 - December 5, 2017

N. Ray Martin, Jr., 69, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 5, 2017. Ray was a graduate of William Fleming High School and of RPI (now VCU) in Richmond. He taught school at Mosby Middle School and Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond. He was the head of the English department and loved his students and fellow teachers. He retired from the Richmond Public Schools at age 58 and returned to Roanoke to be with his family.
Ray was very talented and creative. He was the Drum Major for his high school band and played trombone in the Roanoke Youth Symphony. He gave puppet shows throughout the Roanoke Valley in his high school years. He toured with a Baptist Missionary group in his college years playing the piano and singing. He modeled during his young adulthood.
Ray was preceded in death by his father, Nelson Martin; and his sister, Pamela Martin Watson. He is survived by his mother, Ruby Martin; sister, Ginger McGhee and husband, Leon; brother-in-law, Danny Watson; nieces, Afton McGhee Mormann and April McGhee; and nephews, Chase Watson and Reece Watson.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00PM on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Oakey’s East Chapel. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6 to 8PM at the funeral home.
