James F. Welsh, of Bryn Mawr, PA., passed away on December 5, 2017 at The Quadrangle in Haverford, PA. He was 77. Son of the late Charles and Florence Regan Welsh, he was born on March 21, 1940 in Philadelphia, PA. He attended St. Rose of Lima Parish Grammar School and St. Thomas More High School (class of 1958). Afterwards he worked at several places, most notably in the Mail Room of GE Missal and Space Division in King of Prussia, where he met three men with whom he would be friends for almost 60 years ("The Mail Room Boys"). After saving enough money to return to school, he attended St. Joseph's College (now University), where he majored in history and minored in economics. Jim wanted to work in a career that helped people improve their lives, and so he entered the field of commercial insurance. As a workers' compensation underwriter for Waussau Insurance Co. for seventeen years, he was responsible for the safety and well-being of thousands of employees in their workplaces. He was proud of having helped save limbs and lives by ensuring the people's safety. In 1987, Jim became a commercial insurance broker with Marsh-McClennan Cos., Inc. and remained there until retirement. Jim married Rosemarie Haulk in 1972, but after nine years of marriage, she died of leukemia. In 1984 he married Cally Proios, and they have one son David. Jim always loved a humorous story, and he especially loved to tell one. He was always quick with a quip, and many of them have become staples in the large Welsh Family and beyond. Jim Welsh's life was marked by his love of God, country, family, and friends. He was a man of true goodness, who sought to help anyone in need and who lived his life according to the words of St. Ignatius Loyola: All for the Greater Glory of God. Jim was the beloved husband of Cally Welsh (nee Proios). Devoted father of David Joseph Welsh. Dear brother of the late Helen Gerber (Joseph), Catherine Minnick (Raymond), Charles Welsh (Gloria and the late Millie) and Florence Brady (James). He is survived by numerous nieces & nephews and grand nieces & nephews. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday December 11, 10:30 AM at Our Mother of Good Counsel Church, 31 Pennswood Rd., Bryn Mawr, PA. Interment will follow in St. Denis Cemetery, Havertown, PA. Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Sunday from 6 to 8 PM at McConaghy Funeral Home, 328 W. Lancaster Ave., Ardmore or on Monday from 9 to 10:15 AM at the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sisters of St. Joseph, 9701 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19118-2694.
