Dr. William H. "Billy" Gibbs Jr. departed peacefully Aug. 26, 2003. Born in Norfolk to the late William Henry Gibbs and Theresa Savage Gibbs, Billy attended the public schools of Norfolk, continuing his education at Norfolk State University, Virginia State University, Columbia University and Temple University. He was a noted podiatrist in the Norfolk community for more than 34 years, maintaining a practice in the historic Greater Norfolk Plaza on Fenchurch Street.

Billy was an accomplished musician and vocalist who performed and participated with orchestral and choral organizations throughout the area. Some of his musical affiliates were the famous Booker T. Washington High School Choir, the I. Sherman Greene Chorale, the Virginia Beach Civic Choir and St. John AME Chancel Choir.

Dr. Gibbs was a member of St. John AME Church, Norfolk, and "Watch Care," Open Door Christian Fellowship Church, South Mills, N.C.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Saunders Gibbs; daughter, Resa Lynne Gibbs; sister, Ada Gibbs Milligan (William); nieces, Terri Lassiter (Ronald), Ashley Milligan and Jan Boykins; nephews, William Milligan III and Tyler Lassiter; father-in-law, Robert A. Saunders (Lucille); and a host of other family members and friends.

A funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. John AME Church. The Omega Psi Phi memorial service will be held today at 6 p.m. in Graves Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John AME Church, Norfolk, or Open Door Christian Fellowship Church, South Mills, N.C.
