Leroy will be greatly missed by all who know him.
Leroy "Tio Lee" was born to Roman Salas and María Trujillo on March 16, 1945 in Lucero, Mora County, New Mexico.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Cleo Flores (Salas), brother, Juan Salas, daughter, Jessica Salas and special companion, Margie Peña.
Tio Lee was an avid fisherman, handyman, a “Santero”, enjoyed cooking and spending time “con sus amigos”. Leroy played old style “polkas y valses” on his harmonica along with singing old “corridos y canciones de borrachera y dolor” he was also known in the community for his unique style of making, often upon requests, religious grutitas and homemade shrines for individual “Santos.” A lot of his work can be found in area cemeteries and homes of individuals who were lucky enough to buy his art work. When asked why he sold his items so cheap he would kindly respond “me ayudan mas los santos si los mando a pasiar que el dinero que voy a gozar”.
Leroy- Tio Lee is survived by sister, Dora Romero of Las Vegas, NM, brother, Gilbert Salas and his wife, Rosa of Holman, NM, daughter and son from a previous marriage Amanda Salas and Leeroy Salas of Denver, CO, he also leaves behind his “sobrinos y sobrinas” in Las Vegas, Mora and throughout Colorado and Wyoming.
Rosary service will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Las Vegas, NM. Funeral service will be conducted on Friday, December 8, 2017 at 9:00 a.m., also at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church with Father Rob Yaksich as Celebrant. Interment will follow at San José Cemetery in Las Vegas, NM with the following nephews serving as Casket bearers, Elcio Vigil, Roger Romero, Jerry Salas, Alfredo Flores, Eric Buell, Rudolfo Flores Jr., Raymond Salas and Melvin Salas. Lorenzo Flores will recite the Eulogy after the Rosary.
