Esther Irene McCallum of 1961 Gaylord died Tuesday evening in a local hospital.

She was born on a dairy farm in the Helena Valley March 13, 1916, to Everett and Melissa Simmons. Esther milked cows and went on her milk route before school each day and acquired a strong work ethic.

She attended Helena schools and the Trinity Bible Institute in San Francisco. She served as a preacher and temporary pastor for a brief time at the old Assembly of God Church on Montana Street and was later married to Willard McCallum there on Nov. 23, 1939. She also taught Sunday school for many, many years.

During World War II, while Willard served in the armed forces, Esther worked as a riveter in the aircraft plants in San Diego. She later worked driving a city bus there. They returned to Butte upon his discharge and moved, in 1963, to Deer Lodge, where she worked as a cook at Powell County High School.

She enjoyed painting and quilting and was a charitable person, giving quilts to the needy. The couple returned to Butte in 2000.

Survivors include her husband, son, daughter-in-law, daughter, son-in-law, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, brother, sister-in-law, sister, nieces and nephews [survivor's names omitted].

Two brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

Mrs. McCallum's remains are in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home where friends may call at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday in the Butte Assembly of God Church and interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Memorials: Butte Assembly of God Church.--Montana Standard, Jan. 16, 2002
