Mary Yvonne Vonnie Wray Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Newport News lost the life of its party on Friday, December 1 when loving mother, devoted friend, and general firecracker Mary Yvonne "Vonnie" Wray passed following a three-year battle with ovarian cancer. Vonnie dedicated her life to serving others, as a proud mother to Loren and Ali Wray, as a bright light for her dear friends and family, and as tireless member of Operation Smile's leadership team. She had the unique ability to make every person she met feel that they mattered, and fought hard to make that the case. For those who had the privilege of knowing and loving Vonnie, they always had a shoulder to lean on, a home to stay in, and a supporter they could count on. She made them feel loved, she made them feel safe, and she made them laugh. She really made them laugh. Last month, Vonnie received a lifetime of service award for her 25 years of work with Operation Smile. The award reads: "In honor of a lifetime of service and a unique spirit for living, which has changed the world in both great and small ways, making it a better place for mankind." There was no one in the world like Vonnie Wray, and today there is a little less light without her in it. She is, and will always be, truly loved and missed. Vonnie was preceded in death by her parents James Anthony Bertoci and Eula Bertoci Harris, and is survived by two daughters, Loren and Ali and Berkeley Wray. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 6, at Peninsula Funeral Home, with a memorial service being held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, December 7, at Peninsula Funeral Home. Celebration of Life will follow, location will be announced at the service.
