Sacramento Bee, Tuesday, 25 October, 1955, Page 41 that reads: MOTHER'S MEMORIES Editor of The Bee - Sir: I'm Barbara Blim, the mother of Johnny, who was accidentally shot by his best and dearest friend, Joel Biggs. Please help me to let everyone know how we feel by publishing this. Johnny loved Joel very dearly. Every minure they could be together you can be sure they were. One of the finest things we learned during the year my husband was cubmaster was this: "A man never stands so tall as when he stoops to help a boy." So how could we turn against any boy, much less our son's best pal?" We feel very pleased that God gave us such a fine son to care for these nine years, a son so much like his father that I felt very proud to have been his mother. Nine days before this tragic accident I was operated on. On Sunday, October 9th, my husband had a birthday party for Johnny at our home so that Joel could be there. On Monday my husband brought the children to the hospital to see me and Johnny asked, "Hi, mom. do you know today's my birthday?" Every memory we have of him is such a happy one. And if we had a choice of how to live it would be to live every moment to its fullest. Johnny did just that. He never held a grudge or stayed mad at anyone. He had a zest and curiosity for life that few boys have. People are cruel in not cautioning their children about causing pain to a very fine boy, Joel Biggs. True we have much sorrow but we have absolutely no bitterness. In many ways Joel has a greater sorrow than we have. If anything this has brought a closer friendship between our families for this tragedy could have easily been turned the other way. If but one gun has been put away because of this tradgedy it has not been in vain. Our love and prayers are with the Briggs family. We have never know finer people and feel honored to be their friends. Barbara Blim. 6830 18th Avenue, Sacramento.
There was also an article in response to the above in the same paper dated 29 Oct 1955, page 42 that reads: IMPRESSED Editor of The Bee - Sir: After reading the very excellent letter titled Mother's memories in The Bee, I felt very proud that we have such a noble, really Christian woman in our community. Our country will be in good hands as long as there are people like Barbara Blim with no bitterness, only kindness for a child who meant no harn, I want to tell her thank you and may God bless you. Sacramento. A Friend.
I also found the article about the shooting: Sacramento Bee, Monday 17 Oct 1955 , Page 23. BOY WILL NOT BE CHARGED IN FATAL SHOOTING OF CHUM - Joseph Briggs, 8, of 6731 18th Avenue, who shot fatally his playmate, Joseph Blim, 9, of 6830 18th Avenue, Saturday afternoon will not be charged. This is the word from Joseph A. DeCristoforo of the district attorney's office who questioned the Briggs boy in the police station Saturday. DeChristoforo said the evidence bears out the boy's contention the he did not know his father's .30 caliber rifle was loaded when he took it from a hall closet and pointed it at the Blim boy, while playing. When the Briggs youngster pulled the trigger a bullet entered Blim's left side and came out through his upper right arm. He died five minutes after he was admitted to the Sacramento Hospital
