Richard Arthur "Dick" Goetz passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Friday, December 1, 2017 at Danbury Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was 86 years of age. His life was marked by steady consistency and unwavering dedication to his beliefs, habits and country.
Dick Goetz was born in Danbury, CT in the early days of the Great Depression, on Flag Day, June 14, 1931; the son of the late Jerome and Phoebe Wildman Goetz. He was a lifelong resident of Danbury who graduated from Danbury High School in 1949.
Following this, Dick served in the United States Army, having been called up for state side duty from the Connecticut National Guard, during the Korean War. He married his high school sweetheart Ruth Smith in 1954. They have been faithfully married for over 63 years.
After being discharged from active duty in the military, Dick Goetz spent the next 40 of his life serving in the dual role of both a Chief Warrant Officer in the Connecticut National Guard, as well as Chief Auditor for the Office of the Inspector General for the United States Army.
Additionally, Mr. Goetz has been a lifelong member of St. James Episcopal Church in Danbury. He was also a lifetime Freemason in good standing of Union Lodge #40, A.F.& A.M. of Danbury. He is a member of American Legion Post #100. Dick is also a Son of the American Revolution, tracing his family lineage on his mother's side all the way back to before the Revolution.
His main interests were finance, especially the stock market, following local and national politics and all the news in general, but always focused on taking care of his wife and children.
As a young boy growing up during World War II, he was inspired by his two older brothers, Gene and Leon, who served honorably and bravely in Europe fighting against the Nazis.
For these last few years of his life, in spite of his own declining health, Dick spent every last ounce of his energy devoted to being the primary care giver for his wife, because he was determined to keep his promise. He was at heart a true soldier and patriot. He never left his post.
In addition to his parents, Dick Goetz was predeceased by his brothers Jerome "Junior" Goetz and Leon Robert Goetz.
He is survived by his wife Ruth, as well as his four children: Robert Goetz (Shari), Debra Morse, Gary Goetz (Laurie) and Steven Goetz (Rebecca) and nine grandchildren, Jennifer Goetz, Kelly Donnelly, Christopher Morse, Julia Morse, Ashley Goetz, Michelle Goetz, Phoebe Goetz, Steven Goetz and Shane Goetz: along with five great-grandchildren.
Significantly, he is survived by his oldest brother Eugene Goetz, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Green Funeral Home , 57 Main St., Danbury, CT. Burial to immediately follow at Wooster Cemetery. Family will be receiving friends and family at Green Funeral Home from 4 - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 5, 2017.
