Yemeni Politician. From 1978 until 1990, he served as the President of North Yemen and from 1990 until 2012, he served as the First President of Yemen. Born in Sanaa, Yemen, he joined the North Yemen Army in 1958 and climbed up the ranks, prior to rising to power politically. In 1978, he became President of North Yemen following the assassination of Ahmad al-Ghashmi. Over the next twelve years, he worked hard to unify North and South Yemen, for which endured a civil war in 1994. His closeness with Saddam Hussein distanced a relationship with the United States, however his willingness to confront Al-Queda earned him praise. His resistance to relinquish power led to an uprising among the country's population and in 2011, he survived an assassination attempt which left him wounded. In February 2012, he was succeeded as president by his vice president Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi. Saleh was killed during a clash between his supporters and Houthi rebels.
