James "Jim" Amber, 71, passed away Wednesday evening at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House after a brief illness with cancer. He was 71 years, 6 months and 17 days of age. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m., March 27, at Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Those wishing to attend should meet at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel at 12:30 p.m.

Jim is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Amber of Harvey, IA; a sister, Betty (Walter) Harbaugh of Clay City, IN; a brother, John Fredrick ""Fred"" (Marilyn) Amber of Bull Head City, AZ and several nieces and nephews.

James Amber, son of Claude Clifford and Jennie Inez Clair Amber was born September 4, 1935 in Albia, Iowa. At age 12, he moved to New Mexico to live with his brother and sister-in-law, Joe & Molly Amber. He was a 1953 graduate of Carlsbad, NM high school. Following graduation he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, where he was stationed in California. He also served time in Korea and was discharged in October 1957. He furthered his education at U.C.L.A., where he attended night school for 2 years. Jim worked at various jobs all over the country. He married Mary Jane Wilson Dec. 18, 1970 in Aurora, IL. They returned to the Oskaloosa area in 1971. Jim worked at Clow, Bloom Builders and later at Pella Corp. for 17 years, retiring in 1994. Over the years, they owned operated the Hub in Oskaloosa, J & I Saloon in Harvey, the Truckers' Lounge in Harvey and The Winds in Oskaloosa. He became a life member of the V.F.W. in Oskaloosa and joined the Mason's in 1975. In 1978, he joined the Kaaba Shriners, where he was a member of the Oskaloosa Firemen's Unit and served as Fire Chief for two years. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Eagle's Lodge in Oskaloosa. Jim enjoyed hunting mushrooms and was one of the first to find them. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers: Bill, Max, Eugene ""Fat"", Bob and Joe; and two sisters, Mary Ann Green and Eva Amber.
