Darlene Faye Hughes, the daughter of Owen and Marie (Libby) Hughes was born near Peterson, Iowa, on June 17, 1931. She lived her youth in the Sioux Rapids and Rembrandt vicinity. Darlene graduated from Rembrandt High School and then continued her education at Buena Vista College.

Darlene’s life was blessed with eight children: Dennis, Dwain, Emmett, Lori, Denise, Randy, Jim and Mick. She has made her home in the Linn Grove community since 1963. Throughout her lifetime, Darlene was affiliated with Upper Des Moines Opportunity and Head Start. She began her career as a teacher and later served as their Buena Vista County coordinator and was a food consultant and coordinator for area daycare centers.

Darlene was a member of the Riverside Evangelical Free Church. She had a very special passion and love for SYC (Special Youth Challenge) where she made many quilts for those benefiting from the SYC ministry. Darlene was very gifted in sewing, quilting, doing various crafts, crocheting, knitting and making cakes. She received a great deal of enjoyment feeding and watching the birds and also playing cards at the local Dinner Date.

Darlene’s life is loved and treasured by her family which include her children: Dennis (Brigitte) Wise of Mountain Home, Arkansas; Dwain (Karen) Wise of Sweet Home, Oregon; Emmett (Marlene) Wise of Defiance, Iowa; Randy Wise and Cheri (Woolery) of Spencer, Iowa; Jim (Deb) Wise of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; and Mickey Wise and Patti Snyder of Peterson, Iowa; son-in-law, James Carlson of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren: Thomas, Michael, Melissa, Kim, Lisa, Josh, Matthew, Amy Ethan and Arielle; numerous great grandchildren; other extended family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two daughters: Denise Wise and Lori Carlson; grandson, Jake Carlson; brothers: Cliff Hughes and Russ Hughes; and her sister, Shirley Wolfe.
