Walter received a mechanical engineering degree from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1959. In 1958, he married his college sweetheart, Kris, and they relocated to Connecticut after he graduated from college, eventually settling in Madison. For 33 years, Walter had a distinguished career at the United Illuminating, Co., starting in the Test Department and working his way up to the executive level.
