Bruce Fleming, formerly of Ettrick, VA died at the Colonial Heights HealthCare Center, Colonial Heights, VA. He was educated in the Richmond Public Schools; Virginia State College (now University) (VSU) where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial education; Indiana University (IU) where he earned a Specialist degree in communication media, and New York University (NYU) where he earned a Master's degree and the Doctor of Education.

As a renowned educator, Dr. Fleming served as a teacher and as an administrator in the Public Schools of Fredericksburg, VA, and Raleigh, NC and he taught part time at VSU, IU, NYU and the University of the District of Columbia. He served on the Indiana University faculty for its overseas program in Nigeria, West Africa during the 1960's. The two years that he, his wife and their 4 children, spent in Nigeria are some of their most cherished.

For more than 38 years Bruce served in numerous education capacities with the Federal government, retiring in 1980 as a senior level education officer to the U. S. Secretary of Education, in Washington, DC. Prior to his Office of Education appointment he served as the EEO officer in the Office of the Chief of Staff, Dept. of the Army at the Pentagon. He is a life member of the VSU Alumni Association and in 1993 his Alma Mater, awarded him the "Friend of the University" Award. His specialized work in education carried him all over the world – Austria, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, England, France, French Guinea, Gambia, Germany, Ghana, Israel, Italy, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Kenya, Netherlands, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Senegal, Spain, Switzerland and Tunisia.

He was a retired veteran of WWII and the Korean War with the rank of Lt. Colonel. In 1994 he and his wife traveled to Normandy, France to participate with other veterans in the D-Day Plus 50 celebration. For more than 50 years he was a loyal and faithful member of Historic Gillfield Baptist Church where he was named 1993 Man of the Year. At Gillfield he served as Treasurer, Vice Chairman of the Finance Board, Chairman of the Budget Committee, Member of the Men's Bible Class and Men's Fellowship and, twice as Superintendent of the Sunday School.

He held life membership in the NAACP and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. He was very active in the NAACP and a strong advocate for African American promotion and advancement. In the Fraternity he held offices on the national, regional and chapter level and he devoted his adult life to promoting Brotherhood, Scholarship and service to Humanity. He was a member of numerous national, state and local educational, civic and social organizations and was the recipient of numerous awards and citations.

In 1983 he was appointed by the Governor of Virginia to the first of 3 four-year terms to the Board of Trustees Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation. In 1993 he was inducted into the Chesterfield Co. Volunteer Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. Among the fond memories that his family and friends will always have are the "fruits" of his fishing and gardening hobbies.

A homegoing service was held at 12 noon, Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at the Historic Gillfield Baptist Church, Petersburg, VA.
