Major League Baseball Player. For eleven seasons (1951 to 1961), he played at the first base and left fielder positions with the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds and Houston Colt .45s. Born Richard Edward Gernert, he made his initial mark on the baseball diamond during his years at Reading High School in Pennsylvania. After graduation, he enrolled at Temple University when he received a scholarship to play basketball. He went on to play for the Owls' football and baseball teams, as well as their basketball squad. Signed as an amateur free agent by the Red Sox in 1950, he made his Major League debut on April 16, 1952 and during that year, he belted 19 home runs. The following season (1953), he produced career-highs in hits with 125, home runs with 21 and RBIs with 71, and added a highly-respectable On-Base-Percentage of .371. In 1958, he reached the 20 home run plateau a second time, when he hit 20 round trippers. In 1961, he experienced a National League Pennant with the Cincinnati Reds, as he batted .302 in a reserve role. He appeared in 4 games during the 1961 World Series. In 835 career regular season games, he compiled 632 hits with a .254 lifetime batting average. After retiring as a player, he remained in the sport and served as a coach and Minor League manager with the later Washington Senators. Additionally, he served as a scout with the New York Mets.
