Mena/Mina was born the 5th of 14 children to Hans Hansen and his wife, Juliana Sivertson. One of her sisters, Karen, was working in Oslo when she had the opportunity to go to America but the ship was leaving immediately. She didn't have time to return to her family to say goodbye.
While on the ship, she found there was another girl with the name of "Karen Hansen" so she changed her name to "Karen Dahl," using the last name of her grandparents. As all of her brothers and sisters, but one, came to America, they used the name "Dahl," too. She came through Castle Gate in New York and made her way to Texas.
When she had earned enough money, she sent for Mina, age 20, and her two brothers, Lukas (age 21) and Hans (age 17).
With 2 pieces of luggage, they boarded the ship "Thingvalla" and sailed for New York, arriving there on 16 Apr 1892. Mina and her brothers were one of the first ones to enter the United States through Ellis Island.
They traveled to Texas, where Mina found work in Comanche, Texas. When she had enough money, she sent for her sisters, Liva and Anne, and her brother, John.
She met and married, on 2 Feb 1897, Julius Johnson. They moved to his farm west of Cranfills Gap in eastern Hamilton County. Here they raised a family of boys.
