Patricia Smith Howe, 90, of Wilmington, NC died November 24, 2017 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice. She was born February 18, 1927 in Pottsville, PA, the daughter of Frank E. Smith and Anna A. Smith. She married the late Paul M. Howe September 11, 1948 in Ithaca, NY. Pat was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Robert Smith. She is survived by a son, David Howe and his wife, Christine Winter, of Avon, CT; a daughter, Deborah Howe and her husband, David Gardner, of Elkins Park, PA and Portland, OR; and a daughter, Kimberly Howe of Wilmington, plus 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Pat inspired others with her full throttled community engagement. As an empty nester, she took a college course in historic preservation which led to her forming the Citizens Committee on Transportation and successfully securing funding for the renovation of the Poughkeepsie, NY Train Station into a transit and shopping center. She was subsequently appointed to the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority Citizen Advisory Committee. She was instrumental in establishing the Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site which preserved Val-Kill, her Hyde Park, NY home. Pat and Paul retired to Hampstead, NC in 1980 where they built their own home. Pat co-founded Pender Watch and Conservancy to protect coastal resources and was appointed by the governor to the North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission. She helped establish the Hampstead Library. She managed a county-level political campaign and was approached by both the Democratic and Republican parties to run for the state legislature. She declined, noting that she would ‘rather control the politicians than be one.’ She was active in St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound Episcopal Church including service as the Senior Warden.

Pat and Paul travelled extensively. This included flying all over the United States in Paul’s plane. She took a Pinch Hitter course to be sure she could land the plane on her own; fortunately, those skills were never used. She and Paul took many educational trips through Elderhostel (now known as Road Scholar) and developed friendships throughout the world.

Pat Howe was truly a woman who made the world a better place. She will be missed.

A Memorial Service will be held on December 20, 2017 at 2 pm at Saint Andrew's On-the-Sound Episcopal Church, 101 Airlie Rd. Wilmington followed by a reception in the Parish Hall.
