John Allen (Al) Spivey age 76, of St. Simons Island,Georgia , passed away on Saturday the 2nd of December 2017.

A memorial service is to be conducted at Wesley United Methodist Church on Wednesday the 27th of December 2017 at 11 o’clock in the morning where Dr. Wright Culpepper is to officiate. Burial will be held at Mount Zion United Methodist Cemetery in Telfair County, Georgia.

Mr. Spivey was born in Cameron, North Carolina on the 25th of March 1941. Mr. Spivey graduated from Mount Gilead High School in Mount Gilead, North Carolina and continued on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pfeiffer College in Misenheimer, North Carolina. To this, he added a Master of Library Science degree from George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee.

Mr. Spivey worked as Director of Clara Gould Memorial Library for the College of Coastal Georgia in Brunswick,Georgia for 30 years. Previously, he served as Assistant Librarian at State University of West Georgia Library in Carrollton, Georgia; Merner Library, Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, North Carolina; and J. Murray Atkins Library, University of North Carolina at Charlotte in Charlotte, North Carolina.

On the state-wide level, Mr. Spivey was a highly-respected member of the library profession in Georgia. He maintained numerous professional affiliations on both the local, state and regional levels and served in a leadership role on the Regent’s Academic Committee on Libraries. Mr. Spivey was familiar not only with the current issues in academic librarianship but also with the history of those issues. In addition to his state-wide work, Mr. Spivey had been a leader in the development of library services in his region and was instrumental in developing a library association in Glynn County to successfully involve public librarians, academic librarians, private and public school media specialists. This library consortium is still active today. He led the way in establishing a county-wide computerized bulletin board to facilitate communication among members of this group. He saw the college library adopt new technology that took them from paper card catalogs into the age of the Internet and virtual catalogs, among other innovations. He worked on an initiative called GALILEO (Georgia Library Learning Online), a project of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, which has provided online access to library materials to the state of Georgia since 1995.

To his peers, Mr. Spivey was a wise counselor and a trusted friend. It has been said that “he spoke from experience, he talked straight, and you could depend on him to follow up”. Mr. Spivey was bright, articulate, resourceful, well-informed, and had a captivating sense of humor. He was probably the most informed of any librarian in the State in the library application of copyright law. Mr. Spivey shared his expertise generously and with good grace.

As an active member of Golden Isles Masonic Lodge #707 for over 50 years, Mr. Spivey served in various leadership capacities including Past-Master. He also held a membership with the Blackmer Lodge in North Carolina for over 50 years. Additionally, he served on many boards and organizations including the Georgia Library Association. Mr. Spivey especially enjoyed serving as Secretary of the Masonic Lodge, Administrative Board of Wesley, and St. Clair Homeowners Association, simultaneously. He was a dedicated volunteer to many community establishments including MAP International and the Southeast Georgia Health System Hospital. In his past time, Mr. Spivey enjoyed many activities which included camping, bicycling, reading, writing, repairing small appliances, and dramatics, especially Fishnet Follies. Mr. Spivey deeply loved his church, which also included his church family, his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and above all his family.

Mr. Spivey is survived by his loving of 32 years wife Melanie G. Spivey of St. Simons Island, Georgia; His son, Garrison Cook of McRae, Georgia; His two daughters, Scarlet (Jason) Butzin of Washington Township, Michigan and Billinel Cook of St. Simons Island, Georgia; His five grandchildren, Hannah Cook of Marietta, Georgia, Sloan Butzin and Steele Butzin both of Washington Township, Michigan, Melanie Cahill of St. Simons Island, Georgia, and Frank Cahill of Clarkesville, Georgia; His Sister-in-law Teresa (Jim Ray) Mullis of Cadwell,Georgia; His nephew Dan Stuart Garrison of Cadwell, Georgia; His Sister-in-law Bonnie Spivey of Asheville, North Carolina, and his niece Siobhan (Paul) Brown of Seattle, Washington.

Mr. Spivey was predeceased by his previous wife Dean Mary Jane Austin; His parents Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Spivey; and his brother Ed Spivey. The Spivey family is deeply appreciative to the Hospice of the Golden Isles and Addington Place Memory Care for their unwavering dedication and adamant care of Mr. Spivey during his difficult time.
