Martha Elizabeth Powell Eward Simmons, of Double Springs, entered into rest on Tuesday at Lakewood Assisted Living in Jasper.
Martha was a member of Double Springs First United Methodist Church since 2007, when she moved to Double Springs. Prior to that time, she was a member of Independent Methodist Church of Huffman, where she served as Chairperson of Missions and member of the board. She was a member of the Double Springs Study Club, Double Springs Homemakers and Red Hatters. In her earlier years, Martha was active in the PTO, garden club, church work and was a "Pink Lady" at Medical Center East. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 66 years, having joined in 1948 and serving in Center Point #416 and Haleyville #224. She was also a supporter of Main Street Ministries in Double Springs.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, December 1, 2017, at 11 am at Winston Memorial Mausoleum. A memorial service will also be held on December 10, 2017 at 2 pm at Double Springs First United Methodist Church.
Martha is survived by her grandchildren, Christy Barton, Jacob Eward, Elizabeth Markeles; great grandchildren, Ashley Barton, Anna-Grace Barton, Abagail Eward, Natalie Eward, Chloe Hill, Blake Barton, and Camden Barton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Woodson Simmons, Jr.; sons, James Patric Eward, William Allen Eward and Robert Thomas Eward; daughter, Constance Ruthanne Eward; parents, Garland and Mary Edith Powell; sister, Frances Lucille Sidle; and grandson, Joseph Wayne Eward.
