John was a farmer in Erwin Township and immigrated in 1899. His wife immigrated in 1892. He was the son of Tuomas Henriksson Skinnar (Kinnari) and Sanna Lisa "Lizzie" Mickelsdotter (Anna Lusa Korbela - unknown source) of Finland. When John's brothers immigrated to the USA, they changed their name to KIVI (brother Jacob took the surname Thompson).
John was married to Fanny Helgren on 27 December 1900 in Ironwood , and they had Arvid (1901), Uno (1902), Oscar (1904), Esther (1905), Jennie (1907), Leonard (1909), Lauri (1910), Walter (1912), Werner Brynolf (1914), Wilho (1916), and Hugo (1918). He was of medium height and build with light brown eyes and light brown hair. John died from pneumonia caused by influenza at the age of 40 years, 8 months and 17 days.
