Gospel Singer. A native of Bagdad, Florida, he is best remembered as a member of the gospel musical quartet, The Dixie Echoes. Fondly nicknamed "Whit" and "The Ole Gospel Man," he recorded with them from 1960 to 1967. He was also a founding member of The Gospel Melody Quartet, who were formerly known as The Florida Boys. He sang with and also managed The Florida Boys from 1947 to 1958. He was a noted gospel music promoter who helped organize the first Gospel concert at Carnegie Hall in 1963. His other achievements include creating the popular Gospel Singing Jubilee television program, and establishing the "Singing News" magazine, in 1969. He worked with The Workmen Quartet, and did the radio program, "The Pleezing Gospel Hour", on the WPFA Radio Station for over 27 years. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Force. In his later years, he ran a grocery store with his wife, and a record store in Pensacola, Florida. Whitfield was inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 1990, and the Southern Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 1997. He was also honored with two awards of the the Gospel Music Association's Dove Award for "Best Gospel Disc Jockey."
