Dr. James A. Fennell

San Angelo

Dr. James Fennell of San Angelo entered eternal rest on Friday, Sept. 22, 2017 at the age of 82. He was born to Reynold and Leona B. (Shepard) Fennell on March 22, 1935 in Burlington, Vermont. At the age of five and toward the end of the Great Depression, he moved with his family to upstate New York, where they settled in Ilion.

After high school graduation, he entered the U.S. Air Force, where he was trained as a radar technician. Jim saw duty from Baffin Island, Canada, to Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, before being honorably discharged and moving to Florida to work for RCA at the start of the space race. He spent the ensuing years in the Bahamas chasing missiles, on the USAF Hap Arnold (yes, the Air Force does have a navy!), at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, and at Johnston Atoll at the Pacific Missile Range.

In 1969, he enrolled at the Palmer College of Chiropractic, graduating in 1972. While at Palmer, he was instrumental in forming a college chapter of the US Jaycees, where he served as President. Upon graduation, he established his practice in Tucson, Arizona. Jim was active in the Rotary Club, the Arizona Chiropractic Association, the Tucson Jaycees, and the Gold Prospectors Association of America.

In 1989, he married Patricia (Trudo) Hammel in the ghost town of Stanton, Arizona, then established a small practice in Payson, Arizona. In 1992, Jim and Pat moved to San Angelo and purchased Trudo's Religious Store, which had been started by Pat's parents, Frank and Ruth Trudo, in 1980.

Jim was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and an active member of Holy Angels Church, where he sang in the choir, was a Eucharistic minister, and helped count weekly collections. He enjoyed his summers by going to the Cripple River Gold Mining Camp outside of Nome, Alaska. It was his home away from home where he had many friends. He was a life member of the NRA, Gold Prospectors Association of America, and Lost Dutchman's Mining Association.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; older brothers Robert and David; step-son Michael Hammel; father-in-law Frank Trudo; and brother-in-law Robert Trudo. He is survived by his loving wife Pat; step-sons Christopher Hammel of Austin, Texas, Kevin Hammel (Amy) of Houston, and Stephen Hammel (Christine) of Tucson; eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25, in Johnson's Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at Holy Angels Catholic Church. Friends and family are encouraged to share memories and sign the online guestbook at johnsons-funeralhome.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson's Funeral Home of San Angelo.
