Samuel married Delilah "Lela" Miller on 30 Dec 1871.

Obituary of Samuel J. Huffman

Samuel J. Huffman son of Henry and Catherine Baker-Huffman was born in Jackson Tp. Wells Co. Ind on Jan 3, 1849 and had he lived until Jan 3 1934 would have rounded out a life of four score and five years.

He was one of a very large family of children [14] of whom only two survive, Levi Huffman, [Sen.?] of Jackson Tp. who resides on the old homestead, and Mrs. Jacob Leffler of Warren.

Deceased brothers and sisters who will be well remembered by older residents of Salamonie and Jackson townships were: Jacob Huffman, John Huffman, Frederick Huffman, George R. Huffman, Henry B. Huffman, Mrs. Eliza Griffith and Mrs. Lydia Merideith, sisters and Mrs. Samuel Batson and Mrs. Isaac Jones, half sisters.

His marriage to Delilah Miller took place on Dec 30, 1871 and to this union two children were born: Isaac of Liberty Tp. and Elbridge whose death occurred forty years ago when only a youth of seventeen.

After their marriage Mr. huffman and wife lived for seven years on what was then known as the Myson Smith farm 3 mi. south east of Warren and from here they moved to the farm in Jackson up where they resided for almost a half century.

Leaving the farm they lived for three years in Warren where the wife died and shortly afterwards Mr. Huffman took up his abode with his only remaining son and here he lived until death called him.

Very few of the present generation can properly appreciate the handicaps under which the men and women of Samuel Huffmans day labored. Very little labor saving machinery.

Forests to be cleared, ditches to be digged; rails made to fence the farms, all grain harvested with grain cradles; the heating system, a large open fire place that took in sticks of wood three four and even five feet long and it is doubtful if in 1871, there was a gravel road in all Wells Co. but despite these difficulties, these old timers, by their sturdy industry thrift and economy paved the way for better times and an easier life for their descendants. Do we appreciate their efforts I wonder.

Mr. and Mrs. Huffman were at one time members of the Christian Church known as Pleasant Hill Church and which stood a short distance north of the Batsons Bridge. This house of worship will be remembered by only the mean and women of two score years ago as the church was long since torn down and the oranization disbanded. The names Rev. William Purdue and Rev. Tom Mills will be remembered by those who attended services there.

After the class of Pleasant Hill disbanded, Mr. and Mrs. Huffman united with the South Liberty Christian [ ? ] of this [ ? ] was a member at the time of his death.
