The family settled in Butler county near Parkersburg. She received her education there and later the family moved to a farm near Kanawha.

In 1896 she was united in marriage to Ludwig Steffen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Steffen, the wedding taking place at Kanawha. The couple established their home on a farm three miles north. Blessing the home were two daughters and a son, Marie, Sena, and Louis.
