Walter married Martha Elizabeth McIlhenny on September 8, 1860. He fought in Co. A of the 5th Texas Infantry along with his brother, Charles. He resign in July of 1862 after a head wound suffered at the battle of Seven Pines. Walter Co-founded the Grey & Botts law firm in Houston with his cousin, Peter Grey, which became the Baker & Botts law firm. He was a Mason, becoming the Worshipful Master in 1865 & also belonged to the Scottish Rite.
