BELL - The funeral of Charles Hiram Bell was held at the home of Mrs. S.C.South at Tenth & Niagara streets, on Monday in charge of Mrs. Lucy Carter Woodford who preached an eloquent funeral sermon. At the request of Mr. Bell there was no singing, and a victrola was used. The service at the grave was in charge of the Masonic lodge of which he was for many years a member, with J.M. Pleasant acting as master. The interment was in Mt. Hope cemetery. [list of pallbearers]. Mr. Bell was born in New York(sic) on Christmas day, 1834, and was married in Michigan to Martha Minnis, who died a little more than a year before he did. There was but one child to their union, Mrs W.W.Swindler, who died some years ago; there were no blood relatives living. Mr Bell taught school in his younger days and was engaged in various occupation after coming to Kansas more than 40yrs ago. For a number of years he was engaged in the mercantile business here. He has been in poor health for some months and on July 4th gave up his home and went to board at Mrs. S. C. South's and for more than 5wks was confined to his bed. At Mrs. South's he found every care and comfort that was possible and his last days were made as easy as they could be, altho he was almost constantly suffering. He died about noon on Sunday Sept 5, 1915
