Dr. Allan James Allston
Newark - Dr. Allan James Allston, 86, of Newark passed away on November 23, 2017 at Christiana Hospital in Christiana.
Allan was born on February 8, 1931 in Dearborn, MI and was the son of the late James A. and Annabelle Ryan Allston. He was a member of the 142nd Fighter Squadron of the Air National Guard, and a graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry.
For 57 years, he practiced optometry in Wilmington and Newark. He was a past President of the Delaware Optometric Association, Chairman of the Delaware Optometric Occupational Vision Committee, State Director of the Optometric Extension Program, and represented Delaware on the Governor's Committee on Comprehensive Health Planning. He focused much of his career on working with children who had developmental vision challenges.
He was a former trustee of Bethany Baptist Church, a former board member of Wilmington Christian School, and a member of Ogletown Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara LiCalzi Allston, and his daughters Carol Allston-Stiles (Peter), Dedra Poe (Mitch), Tammy Kater (John), and grandchildren Meredith, Allston, Madison, Nicholas, and Jillian.
Funeral Services will take place privately. Interment will be at Overlook Cemetery in Bridgeton, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wilmington Christian School, 825 Lo.veville Rd., Hockessin, DE 19707.
Funeral services are under the direction of the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce Street in Bridgeton
