Purchased land in in the wilderness of eastern Maine in 1803 and brought his family to Maine in 1806. Originally located in Buckstown (later Bucksport), Hancock County, his homestead ended up in Orrington, Penobscot County, when town lines were re-drawn in 1821.

Began the first tree nursery in the state of Maine and worked to develop cultivars of fruit trees that would prosper in a cold climate.

He was very active in community affairs.
